The costume design for We’re Here, My Dear was developed in collaboration with Laura. We were inspired by the idea of the night team as a unified group, almost identical at first glance, while still allowing subtle details to express each person’s individuality. Drawing from the idea of the performers as nighttime detectives, we imagined them moving through the city with sketchbooks, documenting what they see and experience. These sketches will later be embroidered into the costumes, returning the traces of the walk to each member of the team. We also revisited elements from our previous collaboration, especially the layering of femininity onto the garments, and integrated that sensibility into this new work. For the base of the costumes, Laura sourced a collection of secondhand trenchcoats, then reworked each one in their studio, adding extra fabric and tailored details to create a cohesive yet varied ensemble. Laura also selected sets of colored stockings for each performer, with the stocking colors determining the embroidery palette for each costume, creating a subtle visual connection between the garment and the memories it will later carry.
