New Directions considers how walking is a method for research in design. Walking as a research method offers a designer slowness, repetition, rhythm, distraction, space, and familiarity. Walking is an emerging research method in design: information and landscape designers have used walking as a way to contemplate the surroundings and the self by going alone or with others. There are multiple strategies for using walking as a research method: writing, mapping, filming, image-making, archiving, sensing, speculating, and listening. Walking is a research method because it is a way for a designer to question, investigate, and interpret a surrounding as well as exploring and understanding the self.
